Enhancing the Surgical Value Chain Through Partnership with Industry

Industry serves as a conduit for introducing cutting-edge technologies in the medical field, enhancing surgical practice and patient care, as well as benefiting stakeholders throughout the surgical value chain. While my leadership experiences, including in committee roles within the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), have emphasized the potential of industry-surgeon partnerships, this chapter seeks to highlight the necessity of maintaining fair, balanced collaborations with stringent precautions to safeguard the surgical community and uphold ethical standards. While industry-surgeon collaborations can be a catalyst for advancing surgical practice, transparency and caution remain critical to ensure the integrity of such partnerships and prioritize patient care.
