International Medical Graduates: Strategies to Mitigate Challenges in Medical Education

Leaders have a critical role in cultivating a diverse and inclusive work environment, particularly in the context of surgical education. This chapter highlights the specific challenges encountered by international medical graduates (IMGs) and the importance of recognizing their contributions to the healthcare system. IMGs constitute a significant proportion of the physician workforce in the USA. Despite this, they face unique barriers that hinder their potential for specialized surgical training and professional success. Before starting residency training, IMGs must navigate complex accreditation processes to qualify for a position, and programs require resources to assist with visa sponsorship. Despite having similar qualifications and demonstrating similar patient outcomes, IMGs tend to be perceived as less desirable and competent than US graduates, and this bias can extend to their training period, affecting the kind of support they receive. To counter these challenges, proactive strategies are proposed. Tailored mentorship programs with invested leaders can provide guidance, emotional support, and networking opportunities. Additionally, surgical societies are urged to increase leadership opportunities and mentorship platforms for IMGs to further facilitate their professional growth. Addressing the challenges faced by IMGs is a step toward a more inclusive and diverse medical workforce, which will ultimately benefit patient care.
