Educational Opportunities in Strategy and Leadership

Surgeons are natural leaders and must navigate various roles, from commanding operating rooms to running clinical practices. Despite this, many leadership aspects are overlooked in medical training, prompting a need for additional education. Internal programs within healthcare organizations, such as Baystate Health’s Physician Leadership Academy (PLA), provide tailored leadership training, covering diverse topics from compensation, strategic thinking, and difficult conversations to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Several surgical societies, including the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and SAGES, offer specialized leadership courses. ACS’s “Surgeons as Leaders” and SAGES Foundation Excellence in Medical Leadership Award address leadership challenges, team effectiveness, and personal development. The Brandeis Health Leadership Program (BHLP) and Harvard’s leadership development program for physicians address the complexities of institutional management, and graduates often pursue a Master’s in Business Administration. Overall, these diverse avenues empower surgeons to enhance their leadership skills and contribute effectively to healthcare organizations.
