Understanding Different Practice Types: Private Practice

  • Eric Velazquez

摘要

The decision of which type of medical practice to pursue ranks among the most crucial career choices a physician will make, second only to their choice of specialty. Despite its significance, however, many physicians approach this decision without the necessary forethought and planning. Often, physicians will apply for jobs based on superficial criteria such as location, job description, or the availability of loan forgiveness programs or visa waivers for International Medical Graduates. Unfortunately, this lack of intentionality can lead to a great deal of dissatisfaction with one’s career path, especially when the type of practice in question is not well-suited to the physician’s strengths and interests. The type of medical practice one ultimately chooses can have a profound impact on both their professional trajectory and their personal life, underscoring the critical importance of comprehensively understanding the different practice types before making a decision. Physicians have a range of practice settings to choose from, including private practice (either solo or group), hospital-based practices, hospital-employed positions, academic medicine, and locum tenens. Each of these practice types offers unique advantages and challenges that must be carefully weighed against one another to make an informed decision. Private practice for physicians is a popular career choice for many healthcare professionals. Private practice refers to a healthcare practice where physicians work independently, outside of a hospital or healthcare organization. It is a business venture where physicians have complete control over their practice, including management, finances, and patient care. In this chapter, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of private practice for physicians, the challenges associated with starting a private practice, and tips for running a successful private practice.
