Introduction

This introductory chapter presents the reader with those initial ideas that led to the development of the manual and establishes the structure that will be followed in the subsequent chapters. As a means of setting the scene, the introduction also contains an interactive quiz, addressing those concepts that will be dealt with throughout the manual, as a kind of warm-up exercise. The chapter then closes with some reminders of the developmental stages and the present-day demands and expectations in both intercultural communication and teaching contexts.
