Special Data Processing Operations

Certain processing operations open up new business models for companies. This chapter provides an overview of the core data protection issues in four highly relevant but special processing situations. Firstly, the chapter deals with Big Data analysis that enables the processing of large amounts of data and, based on the comprehensive data sets used, often falls within the scope of the GDPR. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems (which are regularly used in the context of Big Data) are also discussed. Cloud computing services are discussed, as providers of cloud services often act as data processors. Finally, the Internet of Things (IoT), which links everyday objects with services based on data analyses, shall be mentioned, as IoT devices can often compromise the privacy of the data subjects, meaning that these are likely to be considered high-risk processing operations.
