Biblical Symbolism in Advertisement: History, Context, and Related Controversies in Switzerland, Germany, and France
摘要
The article will show how advertising makes use of the symbolic power of the Bible’s language and how it reuses narrative and visual images as well as concise gestures and quotations. The fact that these symbols are highly recognizable almost all over the world makes it easy to resort to them in either an affirmative or subversive way. They can be used to deliver messages in accordance with the Christian religion. But more often, advertisements take advantage of the symbolical charge of Biblical symbols by modernizing, contorting, or banalizing them. Simultaneously, these recourses lead to different forms of inculturation. Depending on the cultural context, what is associated with Biblical quotations or narratives varies, so the forms of commercials as well as the reactions to it vary. The article will present the main controversies that have been triggered by some advertising campaigns in different countries which have themselves received a broad media response. Nearly twenty-five years after the publication of the first book about God and advertising in France, this article takes stock of the situation. It shows what the uses of Biblical symbols in commercials reveal about the evolution of our societies.
