The transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device, together with the coil held adjacent to the scalp in the awake human, can painlessly generate electric fields in brain tissue via electromagnetic induction. The rate of discharge and pulse shape of the capacitor, the magnitude of discharge, coil structural characteristics, and the orientation and distance from the coil to brain tissue fundamentally alter the resultant brain electric field. Variation exists in the strength, depth, and area and current direction of the brain electric field, according to characteristics of the specific device, coil, and parameter settings. Several device types exist with different purposes and parameter settings to match the scientific and clinical applications.
