Coordinated Voltage and Frequency Regulation in Low-Inertia Microgrids Using PV-STATCOM

This paper proposes an advanced control method that can improve the voltage and frequency regulation in low-inertia microgrids (MGs), using the both active, reactive power generation from PV-STATCOM. Differ from most of well-known methods in literature, the proposed method strengthens the coupling between active, reactive power generation and voltage, frequency to improve the overall dynamic response of MGs. Thus, the proposed method enables the PV-STATCOM to support the voltage and frequency response not only in daytime but also in nighttime where the active power generation is not available. The performance of the proposed control strategy is validated in Matlab/Simulink, using a modified low voltage European distribution network.
