Quality Metrics and Performance Measures in Neurocritical Care

Quality improvement (QI) consists of systematic and continuous actions that lead to measurable improvement in healthcare services and the health status of targeted patient groups. Quality metrics/performance measures or PMs are tools that allow us to measure or quantify healthcare processes, outcomes, patient perceptions, and organizational structures or systems. This chapter focuses on the evolution of neurocritical care QI and quality metrics, provides a broad overview of the history, development, and pitfalls related to neurocritical care PMs, and also presents the readers a selected list of neurocritical care quality metrics.
