摘要

The endocrine system is integral to maintain organ system function and homeostasis in humans. Critical illness causes dysregulation of the endocrine system and may disrupt hormonal balance. Neurologically injured patients are at particular risk to develop various endocrinopathies specific to their individual insults and comorbidities. Hormonal imbalances seen in the neurocritically ill can vary temporally as part of the acute, subacute, and chronic phases of critical illness. Emerging therapies continue to be investigated in order to reverse the deleterious effects of acute and chronic hormonal dysregulation. Neurointensivists should be aware of the various endocrinopathies that are present or may evolve in their patients, as well as the associated ICU polypharmacy that may cause endocrine dysfunction. Expeditious recognition of these issues and timely intervention may limit morbidity and enhance outcomes.
