By 2030, 3.9% of the US adult population will have had a stroke. Ischemic strokes represent 87% of all strokes, and stroke is the fifth cause of death when considered separately from other cardiovascular diseases. Stroke remains one of the leading causes of serious long-term disability in the United States. Herein, we discuss the causes, acute treatment, hemodynamic goals and complications of acute ischemic stroke.
