Minimizing Carbon Footprint Through the Traditional Approach Tar Span in the Mountain Valleys of Himachal Pradesh

In India, the hilly and mountainous topography of some states hinders the connectivity and transportation system which isolates the rural communities. This forces them to face lengthy, time-consuming, and often dangerous journeys due to hazardous treks to get their agricultural products and other goods to the market and vice versa. The majority of the population of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) now depends on roads and other technologies to carry their agricultural products from mountain to roadside. People want more technology or facilities without knowing the impact of those technologies on the climate system. In various studies and the IPCC AR6 report, it is mentioned that climate change is becoming a big concern now. The construction of roads in mountain regions makes them more vulnerable to landslides and other disasters. Alternative technologies, such as diesel span operated by fossil fuels, emit a huge number of atmospheric pollutants. Alternative means of transportation like gravity goods ropeway are a sustainable transport solution for mountain rural communities, which also increase their involvement in the local economy. The Gravity Goods Ropeway Transport System enhances the livelihood of local people by providing improved access to markets, increased trade, reduced costs, and expanded livelihood activities. To minimize carbon emissions, gravity goods ropeways are a sustainable technology that should be encouraged more in the hilly region. In many countries, solar power is used in ropeways or cable cars to carry goods and people to remote mountainous regions. We can also apply this solar power in our small tar span technology to carry the products and people, which contributes to carbon neutrality. Government should encourage this type of transportation system in hilly regions instead of diesel span and road construction.
