摘要

The detailed reconstruction of the Neogene Mediterranean evolution described in the first chapter provides information that may help the interpretation of the Neogene magmatic activity in the central Mediterranean region. In particular, the available evidence strongly supports the hypothesis that the uprise of magmas through the upper crust is considerably facilitated (or even conditioned) by the formation of transtensional fault systems. The presumed development, deformation and disruption of subducted lithospheric edifices during the Plio-Quaternary evolution (inferred from crustal tectonics) is used to tentatively recognize where deep fractures (slab tears and slab breakoffs, with the associated magmatic activity) may have occurred.
