Alternative Interpretations of the Mediterranean Back-Arc Basins

This chapter discusses the main difficulties that the alternative geodynamic interpretations may encounter in explaining the observed deformation pattern in the study area. Attention is focused on the most cited slab-pull model, which suggests that the retreat of trenches and the consequent opening of back arc basins is driven by the gravitational sinking of subducted lithosphere (also indicated as trench suction).
