ESG Integration in Islamic Banking Sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain: Paving the Path to Sustainable Finance

This research study focuses on enhancing ESG integration and promoting sustainable finance in the Islamic banking industry of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The analysis is based on Refinitiv ESG disclosure, a reputable financial data source, and employs empirical analysis method. The study proposes strategies and recommendations to drive ESG integration in Islamic banking, including the development of comprehensive ESG frameworks, strengthening reporting and disclosure practices, stakeholder engagement, collaboration, Sharia-compliant sustainable products, capacity building, and regulatory support. The findings underscore the importance of aligning ESG principles with Islamic finance principles and meeting stakeholder expectations. The research highlights the need for further investigation in areas such as measurement and standardization, impact assessment and Sharia compliance and ESG integration. By conducting research in these areas, the Islamic banking sector in Bahrain can advance its ESG integration efforts and contribute to sustainable finance practices. The empirical analysis highlights the varying degrees of commitment and progress among the Islamic banks in integrating ESG practices into their operations and decision-making processes and, reveals varying strengths and weaknesses across the different pillars of ESG values for the banks. To improve their ESG performance, the banks should prioritize areas of improvement within each pillar. This includes adopting environmentally friendly practices, enhancing social initiatives, and strengthening governance frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability and responsible banking practices.
