The path toward the greening of aviation includes the following steps: (i) development and maturity of new technologies, including electric propulsion and sustainable fuels; (ii) where feasible utilization in the current aircraft fleet to maximize shorter-term benefits: EU Fit 55; (iii) otherwise, incorporation in novel aircraft designs, hopefully, is available in the next generation: 2035; and (iv) replacement of existing fleets by new, more environmentally friendly aircraft: International Civil Aviation Organization Net Zero 2050. New technologies must be considered, together with related operational concepts, to allow rapid large-scale implementation.
