Parathyroidectomy: Techniques, Adjuncts, and Potential Complications

  • Reese W. Randle

摘要

Parathyroidectomy is a safe and effective operation for patients with parathyroid disease. Minimally invasive approaches exist but the traditional bilateral neck exploration is also safe. The choice of approach depends upon specific disease characteristics, imaging findings, and surgeon preference. Many tools or operative adjuncts are available and can be used to ensure a successful operation and to minimize complications. Although unsuccessful operations and surgical complications are rare for patients undergoing parathyroidectomy, it is important for clinicians to familiarize themselves with the risks to optimize patient outcomes.
