Assessment of Water Quality in Terms of the Water Quality Index

Water is a necessary resource for life to exist. This study includes, the water quality of the Ganga River in Kanpur is evaluated in terms of WQI. The Water Quality Index (WQI) is a useful and distinctive ranking that helps choose the most effective treatment strategy to meet the current difficulties by giving a comprehensive picture of the condition of its water in a single term. The parameters like temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, TS, TSS, TDS, acidity, alkalinity, magnesium, calcium, total hardness, chlorides, dissolved oxygen, BOD, chromium, and sulphate used for analysis work and also compared with the Indian Standard (IS 10500:2012). The need for clean water for human use and an ecologically balanced environment makes water quality assessment important. It is necessary to manage and safeguard freshwater resources because of the ongoing contamination of water bodies caused by both point and non-point causes. The modeling process involves a thorough and intricate analysis of the surface water body, involving a vast amount of quality parameter data that must be gathered over an extended time. To access the river water quality, WQI has been used extensively. The Ganga River in Kanpur was subjected to a WQI evaluation, and then the river resource's suitability for human consumption was discussed. The proposed chapter will present an extensive examination of the quality of the Ganga River, keeping in mind the development of a new, well-recognized “WQI” in a simplified presentation that may be applied broadly and offer an accurate picture of the water's condition, and may offer a useful method for regulating and evaluating the quality of the water.
