Enhancing Water Conservation and Management in India: A Holistic Approach

India, as a subcontinent, exhibits diverse climate patterns, physiography, and agro-ecological zones. This natural variability significantly influences the distribution of water resources and rainfall across the country. However, the growing demands of agriculture, industry, and services have led to a concerning decline in both surface water and groundwater availability. Unfortunately, water management and conservation efforts in India have often been fragmented and irrational, driven by individual decisions or local democratic bodies. To address this challenge, the country is revisiting its National Water Policy and exploring innovative solutions, including artificial recharge of aquifers using natural methods. In this context, it becomes imperative to adopt a comprehensive and coordinated approach to decentralize water conservation and management initiatives. In this chapter, we have tried to investigate. Drawing inspiration from historical conservation practices, we can reimagine sustainable strategies for India’s natural resources. Additionally, understanding the impact of behavioral changes related to water use is crucial. By synergizing surface water, groundwater, and energy, our objective is to improve long-term water efficiency and accessibility.
