Challenges and Opportunities in Integrated Water Resources Management

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a process that harmonizes the utilization of water, land, and associated resources to enhance economic and social well-being while ensuring ecosystem sustainability. It is crucial to global water resource development and addressing conflicting demands. This chapter analyzes urban challenges, such as water, wastewater, solid waste, and climate change, and assesses the gaps in achieving the SDGs, especially SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities). It provides solution pathways for IWRM, which have many benefits, such as coordinated resource development, environmental protection, economic growth, sustainable agriculture, democratic governance, and human health. It also faces challenges, such as water shortages, quality deterioration, and flood impacts, which are worsened by climate variability and change, urbanization, and consumption and production patterns. It proposes to improve IWRM planning by aligning it with local to national priorities and employing a learning-by-doing approach to innovate and adjust water resources management strategies, tools, and technologies.
