Generation of Water Waves by Wind
摘要
The study background and a summary of earlier work on the wind wave problem is given. The study objectives and the study premises are stated, followed by a presentation of the theoretical flow model. The model includes a deep water body with a free surface and a wind boundary layer with a wind field above. The General Kelvin-Helmholtz model is applied to the system to study the stability of the system. The stability of the water body and the boundary layer interface, i.e., the free surface, is discussed and a final stability equation is established. The stability of the wind field and the boundary layer interface is discussed, and stability results for short and long waves are established. The stability results are discussed including the transfer of the instability from the wind field interface to the free surface. A simple demonstration, by air flow through a pipe on to the free surface of a test container, is described. The results are discussed and summarized.
