Patient-Specific Options for Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty

The use of only commercially available revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) components may require removal of well-fixed TKA and/or total hip arthroplasty (THA) components, total femoral replacement, proximal tibial replacement, arthrodesis, and/or amputation. These procedures are known to have high complication rates and patient morbidity. Alternatively, patient-specific revision TKA components can sometimes be designed to allow retention of well-fixed TKA and/or THA components. Here, we report several case series of patients who underwent revision TKA using patient-specific revision TKA implants. These patient-specific revision TKA implants include nonstandard size implants, polyethylene liners for implants no longer commercially available, asymmetrical polyethylene liners, adapters for rotational malalignment, adapters for ipsilateral THA, components with cross-linked screw holes for additional fixation, and stem extensions for management of periprosthetic fractures.
