Advancing Governance Toward Sustainable Development Based on Multilateralism and Democracy: The Example of Chile

In the aftermath of the 2015 multilateral agreements on the United Nations Sustainable, Development Goals and the Paris Climate Change Treaty, new agreements with sustainability objectives including the UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution have been important drivers for economies and societies. In the same vein, strategic European agreements such as the future EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement, the first of its kind in Latin America, pave the way for broader cooperation for a more sustainable future. Chile, as a regional leader, already shows a remarkable sustainability score in many respects. It seems interesting to explore the influence of multilateralism and democracy on governance for sustainability and the stability of political systems in a world where democracy seems to have been under threat. The example of Chile appears to be particularly pertinent since the country was shaken by social unrest in 2019, but showed strong resilience that led to enhanced democratic processes in an attempt to draft a new constitution.
