Accuracy Improvement of Game Based Shoulder Joint ROM Measurement System for Preventive Care

We are developing a game-based care prevention system, which promotes physical exercise among the elderly by inducing them to wipe or clean virtual windows displayed on a screen. This game can measure the range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder joint, which is one of the main measurement items for activity of daily life (ADL) evaluation. In order to improve the calculation accuracy of the automatic ROM calculation system that is part of this game, we conducted an experiment in which we measured the shoulder ROM by a professional and captured the subject’s movements with a sensor parallelly. The shoulder ROM obtained from sensors and the one obtained by professional measurements were compared and analyzed, in many cases we found that ideal movement was not induced. This suggests that shoulder ROM measurement by professionals does not actually guide ideal measurement movements, and that professionals use their previous experience to correct shoulder ROM. Therefore, when we performed shoulder ROM measurement again as ideal measurement can be induced, we confirmed that in many cases, ideal movement guidance was induced and the difference between the shoulder ROM obtained from sensors and the one obtained by professional measurements are decreased.
