Mobility Demand Estimation: Integrating Population Distribution and Mobility Data

This study presented an approach for estimating mobility demand using area mobility models based on a relatively small dataset of mobility data and population distribution estimates. This method assumes that the mobility of each individual is a function of their address. It estimates the mobility model for a hypothetical individual at a given address by utilizing the mobility data of nearby individuals. By sampling mobility occurrences based on these models and weighting and aggregating the sampled data according to the population density of each address, the method generates area-wide mobility data. The method was applied to real data, specifically to estimate mobility demand for elderly individuals residing in suburban areas. The results show that elderly individuals visit shopping districts from 4 km to 7 km apart. Validation is performed by comparing the results with data from other reliable sources.
