Supporting Parent-Child Interactions in Child Riding: Exploring Design Opportunities for Digital Interaction Strategies

Digital interaction plays a crucial role in enhancing parent-child interactions. Existing research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has explored how digital interactions enhance parent-child interactions in several settings [1]. However, there is limited understanding of the mechanism and design intervention strategies for enhancing parent-child interactions in child riding setting, especially leveraging digital interaction approaches. Child riding is a significant setting for parent-child interactions [2]. This study aims to explore the following research question: How do digital interaction approaches facilitate parent-child interactions in children’s riding process? Methodologically, we conducted semi-structured interviews with the parents with children aged 2–8 years old to identify the interactions during riding process [3]. We analyzed the data using thematic analysis in an iterative, inductive manner. The research findings involve two parts. First, we identified parent-child interaction patterns in child riding and derived a series of insights [4]. Secondly, we explored design opportunities for digitized interaction interventions in child riding, providing a set of design intervention strategies to enhance parent-child interactions in this setting. This study contributes new insights to understanding (1) digitized interaction approaches in child riding settings and (2) digital interaction strategies to enhance parent-child interaction.
