摘要

T Engineering education requires some fundamental courses in the natural sciences. Among those is chemistry. However online courses in chemistry are often lacking in the development of lab techniques and skills. An online chemistry course was developed that could be useful to engineering students and included online and or remote lab pieces. The course was also developed to focus on the principles of sustainability. This focus is in line with many of the Grand Challenges of Engineering [1]. Course content was the same as in an introductory chemistry course covering the same topics but focusing on the sustainability concepts related to them. Titled Chemistry 110 Environmental Chemistry, the course developed to be delivered online. Development of the course in an online space meant changing the approach to course design. Lab work was designed and built around remote teaching rather than trying to take existing labs and make them remote. An emphasis was placed on creating lab exercises that were physically manipulated. Given the remote nature, materials were selected that were sustainable and environmentally friendly.
