It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint: Challenges Yet to Overcome for Digital Laboratories in Education

Laboratories play an important role in university education. Digital laboratories and Cross Reality laboratories, such as remote laboratories, provide many benefits to learners compared to traditional laboratories, e.g., access at any hour. However, a number of challenges arise while building and deploying these digital laboratories. This paper has the goal of collecting and presenting (organisational/technical/pedagogical) challenges, both from literature as well as from Crosslab, a large digital laboratory development project. The hope is that by systematically presenting these challenges, new solutions can be found which can be taken into consideration when developing new or evolving existing laboratories.
