Introduction

This introductory Chapter starts with the context of this book: the problem of understanding, i.e. modeling, the digital world. The cental ideas of the solution of this problem are outlined: Modules to cope with large systems, locally bounded states and events to handle behavior, and symbolic representations to treat real world data and real-world items. The Chapter closes with a glimpse to the running example of the book.
