Fundamentals of Static Symmetrization in Facial Paralysis

Static symmetrization refers to the restoration of facial symmetry at rest. While dynamic reconstruction of eyelid closure or smile is a highly desirable outcome, symmetry at rest is no less important as humans spend a significant portion of their time in repose. Asymmetry at rest is a significant contributor to psychological distress and social exclusion experienced by facial palsy patients. Facial asymmetry at rest is due to loss of tone in the paralyzed musculature. A facial palsy surgeon must be able to offer both dynamic and static procedures used in conjunction to achieve an optimal reconstruction.
