Fundamentals of Microtia

Microtia represents a spectrum of congenital malformation of the external and middle ear of variable severity caused by the abnormal development of the first and second branchial arch and the first sulcus. It is present in some congenital syndromes but is most frequently isolated. Every plastic surgeon must have the knowledge to recognize the spectrum of microtia, perform a comprehensive initial assessment, master the treatment alternatives and possible complications. This chapter will attempt to provide a concise overview on microtia.
