Fundamentals of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second-most common form of skin cancer, representing 20% of all skin cancers. It is characterized by abnormal, accelerated growth of squamous cells, present in the middle and outer layers of the skin. The incidence rates and lifetime risk of developing an SCC are continuously increasing every year due to an aging population and increased risk factors. Although most cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are treated locally, some are associated with recurrence, metastasis, and death. The identification of risk factors, early diagnosis, and opportune treatments are the key factors. This chapter will attempt to provide a concise overview of SCC.
