Fundamentals of Rheumatoid Hand

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of systemic inflammatory arthritis, characterized by chronic synovitis, autoantibodies, and systemic inflammation. The upper limb, particularly the hand and wrist, is commonly involved in rheumatoid arthritis. Multidisciplinary, early treatment, and physical therapy should be focused on preventing joint damage and deformities, which without treatment will progress to significant hand deformity and dysfunction. For all patients with advanced joint damage in the hand and wrist, the plastic surgeon/hand surgeon must have the necessary knowledge and experience to recognize surgical indications, prevent progression, and improve the quality of life of patients. This chapter will attempt to provide a concise overview of rheumatoid hand.
