Fundamentals of Hand and Finger Amputations

A high percentage of occupational accidents cause the amputation of different body segments at different levels, and these being 1.1% of all types of hand injuries. Statistically, the upper limb represents the first place, and the frequency of levels is greater from distal to proximal; likewise, this type of injury is more common in people between 25 and 34 years of age (30%). From the development of the surgical microscope, followed by the implementation of ultrafine sutures and the creation of the microvascular suture by Jacobson and Suarez, microsurgery has evolved, and various techniques have been developed for the replantation of severely damaged limbs. Komatsu and Tamai replanted the first thumb in 1965, subsequently numerous articles were written detailing the surgical technique and survival rates of replantation and revascularization in partial and total amputations of the upper extremities.
