Olfactory Language

This chapter deals with the realm of olfactory language. It examines olfactory terms, the etymology and historical context of olfactory expressions, linguistic aspects interwoven with olfactory perception, and the cultural and linguistic nuances underlying these expressions that shape the lexicon and linguistic patterns associated with odors. We also venture into the figurative domain of interjections and gestures associated with the sense of smell. The importance of the sense of smell in linguistic contexts has been neglected in the past, which has been attributed to the comparatively limited olfactory vocabulary in different languages and the supposedly lower level of olfactory comprehension. However, recent discoveries from different cultures and behaviors challenge the assumption that the expression of smells is less significant compared to other senses.
