A History of Sociological Approaches to Music

The chapter gives an overview of the history of the most important figures and concepts in the sociology of music. As in any history of human thought, the interpretations are closely linked to different epistemologies and vocabularies. For this reason, the histories for each subchapter are in some cases accompanied by lengthy citations that provide a—hopefully appealing—historical patina.
