A Communication Support System for Japanese Language Learners Using Code-Mixing

Machine translation (MT) has become a cornerstone in intercultural communication, facilitating the translation of native languages. However, for foreign language learners, emphasizing language practice in the target language is crucial. This paper introduces a communication tool designed to enable interactions between native Japanese speakers and novice non-native speakers, aiming to maintain language practice opportunities while ensuring effective communication. The system supports text-based chat, employing a code-mixing machine translation (CMMT), enabling conversations between native Japanese speakers and non-native learners. Through this code-mixing approach, our system provides a practical tool for language learners, fostering realistic and utilitarian language practice in diverse communication scenarios within the Japanese language. This design bridges the gap between language learning and effective communication, acknowledging the significance of linguistic practice in enhancing the proficiency of non-native speakers.
