A Real-Time Learning Progress Indicator Updater for Non-reactive Instances in Learning Management System Courses - A User Requirement Based on Evaluation

  • Tina John

摘要

The Onlinecampus Pflege project is developing a learning platform for the acquisition of digital competences for professional nurses. A specific course design for the Moodle instance meets the target group’s need for less navigation effort. All activities are needless embedded in the course without links. In this framework, learning progress indicators are not updated as expected, because in the traditional Moodle course design the page and the progress indicators are reloaded frequently whenever a user accesses an activity link. With the special course design, page reloads are not necessary and therefore the indicators are not updated. Evaluations of the platform show that the usability of the platform is high. However, the user misses the real-time updates of the provided progress indicators. The literature supports the positive impact of learning progress indicators. In order to provide the best user experience, the Moodle plugin Live Course Progress UI Updates has been developed that updates learning progress indicators in real-time. The solution preserves the highly rated course design and satisfies the user’s desire. The plugin is extensible to any other user interface that needs to respond to activity completion events. This makes it ideal for existing user interfaces. New front-end developments could still try to use Moodle’s reactive library. At the very least, frontends should be implemented with unique identifiers and easy-to-call isolated routines for potentially mutating values.
