Introduction to Urban Villages and the Enforced Transience of Migrant Workers

This book examines the redevelopment of urban villages in Beijing, China, to provide new housing opportunities for migrant workers. The research background provides insight into the evolving “geography of opportunity” for migrant workers as urban villages in Beijing have been erased or preserved over the past decade (2008–2023). The background addresses the contradictions of urban village redevelopment. Urban village redevelopment is initiated by the state, but it can also create opportunities for grassroots movements. It also destroys old orders and encourages new grassroots alliances. This chapter presents the research background, significance, research aim and framework, research questions, methodology and book structure.
