The Viability of ECOPAVERS from Plastic Waste in Abuja, Nigeria

Plastic waste constitutes a major environmental challenge, globally. Abuja city, the capital of Nigeria, faces various current and future climate-related challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), waste management, access to energy, informal work and inadequate housing. These are all interlinked issues associated with climate risk and those of social and economic development requiring coordinated action between different levels of government, public and private actors. Preliminary studies on interlocking pavers that are made from plastic waste which are non-biodegradable have shown re-use potential in their strength, durability and aesthetics for use as alternative building materials to concrete interlocking pavers and blocks in the built environment. Further tests in the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute are conducted where the results validate their viability as alternative building materials to concrete interlocking pavers. The results of the test show their average weight, compressive strength and rate of water absorption. The recommendation is for additional thermo-physical tests aimed at optimizing their suitability for use in other building components and the Abuja Climate.
