Learning Through Technology in Dance

As technology has advanced, so has its inclusion in creating dance and its use in dance education. The global pandemic forced both artists and educators to rethink our modes of delivery and the reception of our audiences. Beginning with a brief historical survey, the primary focus of this chapter is on the growth of technology use on both choreographic practice and teaching/learning, and the current limitations of literature on digital choreographic editing tools. The uses of digital technology are also proliferating, including as a production element, for projection as scenic and aesthetic background elements, as well as movement collaborators. Online dance tools such as screendance, Life Forms and dance on social media exploded during this period, innovations which can be assets to the choreographic toolbox and creative processes in education, as well as providing opportunities to extend the performance spaces in which dance is presented. The chapter opening figure is a representation of how technology can be utilised in learning about and through choreography.
