Space Time Dynamics

This chapter focuses on choreographic practice, and its analysis based upon a critical understanding of where movement occurs (space), when it occurs (time) and how it occurs (dynamics), and their relationship to communicating the choreographic intent. The chapter opening figure offers an insight into uses of space. It provides a resource for understanding how space can be manipulated for effect and in turn how space can manipulate the choreographic practice. Of particular significance is the choice of site and how site impacts and is impacted upon as an ingredient of meaningful communication. The use of digital technology in choreography has increased the capacity to teach and learn synchronously and asynchronously. Audiences can be increased as accessibility is extended, and approaches can engage time elementally and with greater degrees of variances. Choreographic tools are reinvented, such as cannoning movement, and offer alternatives for other creative possibilities, not always physically possible in situ. The element of dynamics explores the release of energy and how movement is performed. The chapter interrogates the ways in which dynamics are more effectively encountered, understood and implemented when working digitally. There is a significant consideration of the change in dynamics, or energy flow, exhibited through working in a digital platform compared to a live theatrical event. Lastly, the discussion of time attends to the duration of a movement or phrase, as one of the central elements of choreographic practice and the alignment of that movement with music, sound or silence.
