This chapter provides a broad overview of US language varieties as they are depicted in TV series, noting significant changes in their portrayal over time. It discusses how various socioeconomic, regional, and ethnic dialects have been used to enhance character development, reflect societal changes, and sometimes perpetuate stereotypes. Through a chronological framework, the chapter identifies four broad periods or ‘ages’ of television, each marked by distinct linguistic trends and technological advancements that influenced scriptwriting and dialect representation.
