Invented Languages in AVT

Although invented languages in film are not a new phenomenon, relatively little attention has so far been paid to them as a special case in audiovisual translation. The chapter investigates their different types, purposes, and functions on screen and discusses the theoretical frameworks and practical solutions to their dubbing, voiceover translation, and subtitling across various contexts. It shows that translational decisions regarding invented languages frequently entail considerable stylistic, narrative, and ideological consequences for the target text, which in turn can influence the perception of an invented language by the audience as well as its linguistic and cultural status in the receiving community.
