Inquiring Minds: The Transformative Influence of Qualitative Methods in Engineering Education

The purpose of qualitative research methods in Engineering education is to ensure a more interpretative comprehension of a research topic without jeopardizing the study’s credibility, validity, and dependability. However, teaching and applying qualitative methods in Engineering has some challenges that need to be demystified together with the students. Thus, the main objective of the present study is to understand the role of qualitative research methods, building upon insights from a workshop activity as a practical extension of the “Research Methods” subject. Students identified several key challenges, including the management of qualitative data, the subjective nature of qualitative research methods, and ensuring the reliability of conclusions drawn. Addressing these challenges involves selecting appropriate qualitative techniques, refining data collection and analysis processes and fostering critical thinking skills among students. By demystifying these challenges and providing practical guidance, Engineering educators can empower students to navigate and harness the potential of qualitative research methods effectively. It was also understood that students have difficulties to identify, among the qualitative research approaches, which are the most suitable for their objectives or research questions.
