Advancing Resilience in Manufacturing Strategy: A Systematic Literature Review and Future Research Directions

The article examines the conceptualization, development and implementation of resilience in Manufacturing Strategy (MS) and provides different opportunities for future research based on the research gaps identified in the existing literature. This study adopts the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology to explore resilience in MS. The research process consists of five phases: article compilation from Scopus and Web of Science, application of inclusion/exclusion criteria, critical analysis of shortlisted articles, bibliometric and content analyses, and identification of research gaps. This rigorous approach ensures a comprehensive review, allowing for the identification of current trends and future research opportunities in the MS and resilience landscape. The bibliometric analysis reveals a surge in articles MS and resilience in 2022, mainly published in a few key journals. Most contributions come from India and the UK. Topics like COVID-19 and smart manufacturing frequently appear. Citation analysis shows growing interest in the subject, with empirical studies being the most common research type. The study analyzes various dimensions of resilience in MS, exploring definitions, nature, and factors contributing to resilience. It identifies interdisciplinary approaches to defining resilience and highlights the need for empirical validation. Research opportunities include clarifying resilience attributes, roles, and measurement models in MS. The study also discusses the impact of Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies, suggesting that future research should focus on understanding and operationalizing resilience in manufacturing.
