SafeSpace, the Smart Caretaker: An AI-Driven Safe and Comfortable Environment for the Well-Being of Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patients
摘要
In spite of the obstacles they face, many people living with dementia aspire to continue living independently for as long as possible. While technology cannot address all their needs, smart home systems have shown benefits for both patients and their caregivers. However, little research has explored how the recent improvements in Generative AI can re-imagine such systems. In this paper, we present SafeSpace, a smart home system designed to augment the dementia care process. By emphasizing privacy, security, personalization, accessibility, and augmentation, SafeSpace is a holistic solution with real-world feasibility. To showcase the system’s design and potential, we implement an initial prototype and provide a qualitative evaluation of its flexibility and latency. We conclude by summarizing the main takeaways of SafeSpace and the key areas for future work.
