Optimization for Construction Site Layout Planning with Multiple Constraints Using an Evolutionary Algorithm

摘要

Optimizing the site layout for a construction project is one of the most critical aspects of the planning phase. It contributes to the reduction of travel time and costs and aids in increasing the overall safety on-site. The main focus of this research is to develop a site layout optimization model using a genetic algorithm while considering the irregularity of site facilities and different constraints within the construction project. Inspired by biological evolution, the evolutionary algorithm searches for the near-optimum site layout where feasible solutions act as individuals in a population and the fitness function determines the quality of these solutions. The layout problem considered in the research examines different constraints and limitations to imitate the different conditions that could happen in real-life application. The research concludes with examples illustrating the strength and limitations of the proposed algorithm.
