Carnival Among the Sexes

This chapter will look at Carnival, women, dating and how men behaved during these days of Momo. Here we delve into come themes such as: “Do you know me?”—a kind of Brazilian Charivari. The prejudice against tranvestites, the conservatism and hypocrisy of part of the Brazilian intelligentsia in relation to relationships and sex, the devotion and adoration tha men and women had for famous prostitutes who paraded in the Great Societies and who were very prominent in the period. We will also look at how carnival and gambling were associated and disseminated in illustrated magazines, as well as magazine theatre, nightlife and fashion and how women and men dressed and behaved in public spaces and how this was associated and portrayed during carnival days.
